Shuffle tracking

A player watches where certain cards or groups of cards go during a shuffle, then uses that knowledge to predict when they will come back into play.

Also called
Ace tracking, when the tracked group is aces3
Applies to
Primarily blackjack and other multi-deck card games12
Difficulty
Harder with complex shuffles, easier with simpler or imperfect shuffles15

Key points

  • The player watches for favorable or unfavorable card clumps during the shuffle and estimates where they end up in the deck or shoe.24
  • Betting and play decisions are timed for when tracked cards are about to enter play from a new shoe.2
  • Shuffle tracking is distinct from card counting; it follows physical card locations rather than a running count.
