Slot terminology describes two separate things: the mechanics you can see, such as reels and paylines, and the maths you cannot, such as return to player and volatility.

The mechanical terms are largely marketing labels and vary between studios. The mathematical ones — RTP, volatility, hit frequency — are the terms that actually tell you how a machine behaves, so they are the ones worth understanding properly.
