How to play bridge
- Deal 13 cards to each player. The dealer rotates clockwise each hand.
- Players bid in clockwise order to set a contract: a number of tricks (7–13) and a trump suit or no trump.
- The partnership that wins the bid becomes declarer and dummy. Dummy's hand is placed face-up on the table.
- Declarer plays both their hand and dummy's hand. Defenders play as a team to stop the contract.
- Each trick consists of four cards. The highest trump wins; if none, the highest card of the led suit wins.
- Score points for tricks made. In rubber bridge, game is 100 or more contract points below the line.
Bridge scoring basics
In rubber bridge, points are divided into those earned below the line (towards game) and above the line (premiums). A game is won when a partnership accumulates 100 or more contract points below the line.4 Duplicate bridge uses a different scoring system where the same deal is played at multiple tables and results are compared.5
