Rummy rules
Rummy rules set out how players draw cards, form melds of matching ranks or suits, and discard to empty their hand before opponents do.
Key points
- Each turn: draw from stock or discard pile, optionally lay down melds, then discard one card.12
- A meld is either a set (three or four same-rank cards) or a run (three or more consecutive same-suit cards).12
- In standard scoring, face cards are worth 10 points, aces 1 point, and number cards their face value.12
- Variants like gin rummy and 500 rummy have their own deal sizes, scoring targets, and meld rules.53
How to play standard rummy
- Deal the appropriate number of cards (10 for 2 players, 7 for 3–4, 6 for 5–6). Place the remaining deck face down as the stock, and turn the top card up to start the discard pile.12
- On your turn, draw the top card from the stock or the discard pile. You may then lay down any melds (sets or runs) from your hand.12
- End your turn by discarding one card face up onto the discard pile. The round ends when a player melds all their cards and discards their final card.12
- Score the round: each opponent adds up the point value of cards left in their hand. Play continues until a player reaches the agreed target (often 100 or 500 points).12
Common rule variations
Many rummy variants adjust the deal: gin rummy deals 10 cards to two players, and melds require at least three cards with no discarding after going gin.5 500 rummy deals 7 cards to each player and scores to 500 points, with players able to lay off cards on existing melds.34
In Indian rummy, each player gets 13 cards and must form at least two sequences, one of which must be pure (no joker).68 Open rummy allows players to pick from the discard pile only if they immediately use the card in a meld.7
House rules often differ on whether aces are high or low in runs, and whether jokers are wild. Always confirm the variant's specific rules before playing.

How do you play gin rummy cards?
Gin rummy is a two-player game where each gets 10 cards. Players draw and discard, aiming to form melds. Going gin (melding all cards) earns a bonus; otherwise, the player with fewer unmatched points wins the hand.5
