Pot odds vs implied odds

Pot odds compare the immediate cost of a call to the current pot size; implied odds add the expected future winnings if the draw completes.

Pot odds formula
Ratio of current pot to call cost. Example: calling $10 for a $40 pot gives 4-to-1 odds.2
Implied odds
Extend pot odds by adding expected future chips won if the draw hits.13
When used
Call-or-fold decisions, especially with drawing hands.12

Key points

  • Pot odds use only the current pot and immediate call cost; implied odds include future bets you expect to win.12
  • A call is justified when your equity exceeds the pot-odds threshold; implied odds adjust that threshold upward when future winnings are likely.45
  • Implied odds matter most when you expect to lose no more if the draw misses but gain extra bets if it succeeds.1
