Horse racing betting

Horse racing betting is the practice of staking money on the finishing position of horses in a race. It covers straightforward win bets, place and each-way wagers, and pool-based systems such as parimutuel betting.

Key points

  • A bettor stakes money on a horse to win or finish in a specified position; the return depends on the bet type and betting system.16
  • In fixed-odds betting the odds are set when the bet is placed; in parimutuel betting all stakes go into a pool and winners share it after deductions.23
  • A £2 win bet at 4/1 returns £8 profit plus the £2 stake; a £2 each-way bet costs £4 total and pays a fraction of the win odds for the place part.67
  • Each-way place terms often pay one quarter or one fifth of the win odds, depending on the number of runners and race type.4
  • Horse racing betting is regulated in some jurisdictions, such as by state law in the U.S. and under Gambling Commission rules in Great Britain.29

Fixed-odds vs parimutuel betting

In fixed-odds betting, the bookmaker sets the odds and the bettor locks them in at the time of the bet; the payout is guaranteed regardless of other bets.5

In parimutuel betting (also called pool betting or Tote betting), all stakes on a race go into a pool. The operator takes a deduction (the takeout) and the remaining pool is divided among winning tickets.38 The final dividend depends on how much was wagered on each horse, so it is not known until the pool closes.4
