Tote betting
Tote betting is a pool-betting method where all stakes on a given bet type go into a single pool, and after the operator takes its cut, the rest is shared among the winning tickets.
- Also called
- Pool betting, parimutuel betting; in some countries, the tote.1
- Applies to
- Horse racing, football pools, and other sports; racing bets include win, place, each-way, exacta, trifecta, swinger, and Placepot.23
- How it works
- Punters bet into a common pool; after the event, the pool is divided among winning tickets after the operator's deduction.24
- Payout
- Not fixed in advance; it depends on the pool size, number of winners, and operator's commission.74
Key points
- All stakes on a bet type go into a single pool; the final payout is not known until betting closes.74
- The operator removes a commission (deduction) before dividing the pool among winning tickets.2
- In Great Britain, the Tote historically held an exclusive right to operate pool betting on horse races under the Horserace Betting and Olympic Lottery Act 2004.6
- Tote betting differs from fixed-odds betting, where the bookmaker sets a price in advance.
How tote betting works
- Punters place bets into a common pool for a specific bet type (e.g., win).4
- After the event, the operator removes its commission from the total pool.2
- The remaining pool is divided equally among all winning tickets.5
- The payout per unit stake is calculated and displayed after the race.
Tote betting vs fixed-odds betting
In fixed-odds betting, the bookmaker offers a set price at the time the bet is placed. In tote betting, the odds are not fixed and depend on the final pool size and number of winners.74 This means the payout can change until betting closes, and all successful bettors receive the same dividend per unit stake.
